MUST REMEMBER THIS
Is about life in Barnwell County, South Carolina during trying times. I’m the little one in the picture. I was born in
1929 on a farm near Elko. My father’s store was in Elko; his sawmill
was near Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. We passed Tom Willis’s Pond going
to school in Williston. We went to Healing Springs often, but Barnwell
was scary; that’s where the poor house, jail house, and courthouse
were. From our farm, we could hear Elko’s cotton gin pounding and
screaming trains coming from Blackville or Aiken. Mama’s old home place
was near Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. I didn’t have to research these
stories, just remember them. |
